Δημοσιότητα is built on δημόσιος, meaning public, which itself comes from δήμος, the people or the community. Greek scholars later added the abstract noun suffix -ότητα, the same pattern seen in words like ταχύτητα (speed), to turn the adjective public into the noun publicness, or publicity. Δήμος traces back to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning to divide, tied to the idea of land or people apportioned into a community.
