Etymology

Υπεύθυνος is built from the ancient preposition/prefix ὑπό ('under') and εὔθυνα/εὐθύνη ('the rendering of accounts, audit') — the formal examination an Athenian magistrate underwent at the end of his term. So one who is υπεύθυνος is literally 'subject to giving an account', i.e. answerable or liable. The root εὐθυν- goes back through εὐθύνω ('to set straight, to call to account') to εὐθύς ('straight'), whose deeper origin is uncertain.
