Etymology
From από- ('from, away') + κλείω ('to close, shut'), so literally 'to close (something) off or away.' The verb κλείω descends from Ancient Greek κλείω/κλῄω, traced to a Proto-Indo-European root for closing and fastening that also yields Greek κλείς 'key' and Latin clāvis 'key' and claudere 'to close.' The modern range runs from physically blocking or sealing off a place to figuratively excluding people or ruling out possibilities.
