Etymology
From Ancient Greek φανταστικός 'able to present to the mind, of the imagination', derived from φαντάζω 'to make visible, present to the mind', itself from φαίνω 'to bring to light, show'. The modern colloquial sense 'fantastic, wonderful' developed from the idea of something so impressive it seems imaginary. English 'fantastic' descends from the same Greek word via Latin phantasticus.
