Etymology
From Ancient Greek κρίσις (krísis) 'a separating, decision, judgment, the outcome of a trial', a deverbal noun from κρίνω (krínō) 'to separate, discern, judge'. The modern noun retains the demotic ending -ση in place of learned -σις. English 'crisis', 'critic', and 'criterion' are all later borrowings from this same Greek family.
