Etymology

Modern Greek γέφυρα descends unchanged from Ancient Greek γέφυρα 'bridge, dam, causeway.' Its origin is disputed and is widely regarded as Pre-Greek (a non-Indo-European substrate word), so no secure PIE root can be reconstructed. Tellingly, the word shows wide dialectal variation in antiquity, which points to a borrowed or substrate source.
