Etymology
From Ancient Greek θαῦμα (thaûma) 'wonder, marvel, object of astonishment', derived from the root of θεάομαι (theáomai) 'to gaze at, behold' plus the result-noun suffix -μα. The sense developed from 'a thing one gazes at in astonishment' to 'wonder, miracle'. The deeper Proto-Indo-European origin of the θαυ-/θεα- root is uncertain.
