Etymology
πῦρ descends from Proto-Indo-European *péh₂ur̥, the inanimate or impersonal word for 'fire' (as opposed to the animate *h₁n̥gʷnis seen in Latin ignis). It is an ancient neuter root noun with genitive πυρός. The same root yields English 'fire' and German 'Feuer', and through Greek it supplies the international combining form 'pyro-'.
