Etymology
Formed from the Ancient Greek noun ἔθνος (éthnos, 'nation, people, tribe') plus the productive adjective-forming suffix -ικός ('-ic, pertaining to'). Ancient Greek ἐθνικός already meant 'national, foreign,' and in Hellenistic/Biblical Greek it came to denote 'gentile, heathen.' The noun ἔθνος belongs to the same family as ἔθος ('custom') and ἦθος ('character'), referring originally to a group bound by shared habits.
