Etymology
From Ancient Greek κατηγορέω (katēgoréō) 'to speak against, accuse', a compound of κατά (katá) 'against, down' and ἀγορεύω (agoreúō) 'to speak in public, harangue'. The latter is denominative from ἀγορά (agorá) 'assembly, marketplace', itself derived from ἀγείρω (ageírō) 'to gather together'. The image is literally of speaking publicly 'against' someone before the assembled people. Aristotle's technical use of the derivative κατηγορία gave European languages the word 'category'.
