Etymology

The word goes back to Ancient Greek ἔθνος, meaning a group of people living and acting together: a tribe, caste, or nation. Its origin before Greek is not settled. Some scholars link it to ἔθος (custom), but the connection is not certain, and others treat it as a word Greek borrowed from an earlier, non-Indo-European language of the region. Modern Greek kept both the form and the core sense of a people bound by common identity.
