Etymology
The word joins δῆμος, meaning people or district, with the suffix -αρχος, meaning ruler, from the verb ἄρχω, to rule or lead. In ancient Greece a δήμαρχος headed a deme, the smallest administrative unit of Attica. The modern sense narrowed to the elected head of a city or town, the direct equivalent of mayor.
