Etymology
Modern Greek έπειτα descends from Ancient Greek ἔπειτα, a compound of the prefix ἐπί ("upon, in addition to") and the old temporal adverb εἶτα ("then"). The prefix ἐπί goes back to the Proto-Indo-European root *h₁epi, meaning roughly "near, at, upon." εἶτα functioned on its own as a sequencing adverb in Ancient Greek, and the compound simply reinforced that sense of "and then, next."
