Etymology
From Ancient Greek φάντασμα 'apparition, image presented to the mind', a verbal noun from φαντάζω 'to make visible, present to the eye', itself built on φαίνω 'to bring to light, cause to appear'. The ultimate source is the Proto-Indo-European root *bʰeh₂- 'to shine, appear'. English phantom, phantasm, fantasy and phenomenon are all later borrowings from this same Greek family.
