Etymology
From Ancient Greek ἔκρηξις (ékrēxis) 'a bursting out', the action noun of ἐκρήγνυμι (ekrḗgnymi) 'to break out, burst forth'. This verb is built from the prefix ἐκ- 'out' plus ῥήγνυμι (rhḗgnymi) 'to break, burst'. The Ancient abstract suffix -σις regularly evolved into the Modern Greek noun ending -ξη, so the word literally names a violent 'breaking out' of matter or energy.
