Etymology
From Ancient Greek διοικητής 'administrator, steward', the agent noun of διοικέω 'to keep house, administer, govern'. That verb is διά 'through, thoroughly' + οἰκέω 'to dwell, manage a household', built on οἶκος 'house'. The notion of running a household thoroughly broadened over time into administering institutions and commanding military units.
