Etymology

From έγκλημα ('crime') plus the agentive suffix -ίας, which forms masculine nouns denoting a person characterized by something. Ancient ἔγκλημα meant 'accusation, charge', from ἐγκαλέω ('to call in, accuse'), itself ἐν ('in') + καλέω ('to call'). So an εγκληματίας is literally 'one who is called out / charged' — the accused, hence the doer of crime.
