Etymology
θυμίζω 'to remind' is the causative counterpart of θυμάμαι 'to remember', built on the root of θυμός, which in Ancient Greek denoted the soul, spirit, and seat of thought and feeling. The factitive suffix -ίζω turns θυμ- into 'to cause (something) to come to mind'. θυμός itself traces back to the Proto-Indo-European root *dʰuh₂- 'to smoke, rise as vapour', the spirit once imagined as a rising breath.
