Derived from the Greek verb ναρκώ/ναρκόω 'to make numb, benumb', itself from the noun νάρκη 'numbness, torpor'. The adjective is formed from the verbal adjective ναρκωτός 'numbed' plus the productive suffix -ικός, giving the sense 'capable of causing numbness'. It is the direct source, through Latin and French, of the international medical term 'narcotic'.
