The root is νάρκη, an ancient Greek word for numbness or torpor. Its origin before Greek is unclear; Beekes classifies it as likely pre-Greek rather than inherited Indo-European vocabulary. From νάρκη came the verb ναρκώνω, to numb, and the adjective ναρκωτικός, meaning numbing or stupefying, already used by ancient medical writers. In Modern Greek the neuter form ναρκωτικό was turned into a noun meaning drug or narcotic substance. The same Greek root passed into Latin and French and gave English narcotic, narcosis, and narcolepsy.
