Etymology
The verb ξεχνώ comes from an earlier form εκγνώ, built from the ancient prefix εκ- (out of) and the root γνω- of γιγνώσκω, meaning to know. Over centuries the cluster κγν simplified to χν, giving ξεχνώ. So to forget is, at root, to have knowledge pass out of you. ξεχνιέμαι is the mediopassive form of that same verb, used both for something being forgotten and for a person losing themselves in an activity.
