Etymology
Inherited from Ancient Greek κύκλος ('ring, wheel, circle'), going back to a reduplicated Proto-Indo-European noun *kʷékʷlos ('wheel'), derived from the root *kʷel- ('to turn, revolve'). The same noun gave rise to many words for 'wheel' across Indo-European languages. In modern usage it spans the literal geometric circle and figurative senses such as 'cycle' and 'social circle'.
