Etymology

From Ancient Greek ἀκρίβεια (akríbeia) 'exactness, precision', an abstract noun built on the adjective ἀκριβής (akribḗs) 'exact, precise, accurate' with the quality-noun suffix -εια. The deeper origin of ἀκριβής is uncertain and is often treated as a Pre-Greek formation with no secure Indo-European source. The modern colloquial sense 'expensiveness, high cost of living' developed alongside the related adjective ακριβός 'expensive'.
