Etymology
From Ancient Greek ἐπιθυμία, a compound of ἐπί (epí, 'upon') and θυμός (thymós, 'spirit, passion, heart'), formed with the abstract-noun suffix -ία. The underlying image is of one's passion or spirit being set upon something. θυμός itself traces to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning 'to smoke, breathe', tying emotion to the idea of the breath of life.
