Etymology
Formed from the prefix κατά- ('down, thoroughly, completely') joined to the ancient verb φέρω ('to carry, bring'). The literal idea of 'bringing/carrying through to the end' developed into the figurative sense of 'bringing about, accomplishing, managing'. The φέρω element goes back to the Proto-Indo-European root *bʰer- 'to carry, bear'.
