Etymology

Καταφέρνω comes from κατά, an intensive prefix meaning down or thoroughly, combined with φέρνω, the everyday verb for bringing or carrying. Φέρνω itself descends from ancient Greek φέρω, to carry or bear. Over time the combined form shifted from a literal sense of bringing something down to the figurative sense of bringing an effort to completion, hence managing or succeeding at something.
