Etymology
Θερμοκρασία is a modern Greek coinage built to translate the concept of temperature. It joins θερμός, meaning hot or warm, with a form of κρᾶσις, meaning a mixing or blending, from the verb κεράννυμι, to mix. The idea is close to the Latin origin of the English word: temperature comes from temperare, to mix in due proportion. So Greek and Latin both name this quantity as a kind of proper blend of heat.
