Etymology
Μονοπάτι is a compound of μόνος, meaning single or alone, and πάτος, an older word for a trodden track or floor, itself tied to the verb πατώ, to tread or step. Greek added the diminutive ending -ι to πάτος, giving a word that once meant something like a slight, single-file track. Over time it settled into the ordinary modern word for any narrow path.
