Etymology
The word comes from ancient Greek ὕστερος (hysteros), meaning "latter" or "coming after". The neuter form was used on its own for the thing that comes out after the birth itself, the afterbirth. The same ancient adjective is the source of ὑστέρα (hystera, womb), which gave English words like hysteria and hysterectomy.
