Etymology

Γιός descends from Ancient Greek υἱός, the standard word for son. Over time the initial vowel weakened into a glide, turning the two syllables of υἱός into the single syllable of modern γιός. The formal ancient form υιός survived alongside it and is still used in religious and elevated speech.
