Etymology
διαφέρω combines the prefix δια- ("through, apart") with φέρω ("to carry, bear"). The literal sense is "to carry apart," which shifted over time to mean "to be different" or "to be distinct." φέρω comes from a widespread Indo-European root for carrying, the same root behind Latin ferre and English "bear." Latin built a close parallel, differre (dis- + ferre), which gives English "differ" and "different": not a borrowing from Greek, but a cousin formed the same way from the same root.
