Etymology
Γραφτό comes from the verb γράφω, "to write," which traces back to Ancient Greek γράφειν. That verb originally meant "to scratch or carve," a memory of the era when writing meant cutting marks into wood or stone. The Ancient Greek root goes back to the Proto-Indo-European root *gerbh-, "to scratch," which also gave Germanic languages the word "carve." In Modern Greek, the suffix -τό turned the verb into an adjective meaning "written," and everyday speech narrowed that sense to describe what fate has already written down.
