Etymology
Αποκάλυψη comes from the verb αποκαλύπτω, formed from από- (away, off) and καλύπτω (to cover). The literal sense is to take a covering away, which gives the noun its meaning of uncovering a hidden truth. The word passed into English almost unchanged, as apocalypse, though English narrowed that specific spelling to the biblical sense.
