Etymology

βολικός comes from the colloquial verb βολεύω, meaning 'to suit' or 'to be convenient.' That verb is built on βολή, 'a throw' or 'a cast,' from the ancient verb βάλλω, 'to throw.' The link is a game metaphor: a throw that lands well suits the thrower, and by extension something that lands well for you is convenient. The deeper origin of βάλλω itself is debated among linguists and not settled.
