Μητέρας is the genitive singular of η μητέρα 'mother', descended from Ancient Greek μήτηρ (mḗtēr), genitive μητρός. The word goes back to the Proto-Indo-European kinship term for mother, one of the most stable and widely inherited words across the family. Its initial 'ma-' element echoes the universal nursery syllable, while the -ter suffix is the same that appears in πατήρ 'father' and θυγάτηρ 'daughter'.
