Etymology
The verb builds on ενθυμίζω, itself formed from the prefix εν- (in) and the noun θυμός (spirit, mind, feeling), with the causative suffix -ίζω added to make a verb meaning roughly to put into someone's mind. The prefix υπο- (under, further) was added later to give υπενθυμίζω, now the standard modern form. θυμός traces back to a root meaning to rise as smoke or vapor, an image of feeling or awareness stirring up.
