τιμωρώ comes from ancient Greek τιμωρέω, a verb built on the noun τιμωρός, meaning avenger or protector of honor. That noun joins τιμή, meaning honor or worth, with an element related to ὁράω, to watch or guard, seen also in words like θυρωρός, doorkeeper. The original sense was to stand guard over someone's honor, which narrowed over time to avenging a wrong and then, in Modern Greek, to punishing.
