Etymology
θόρυβος is an ancient Greek word already found in Homer and classical prose with the sense of confused noise or clamor, especially the sound of a crowd. Its origin before Greek is not settled. Modern scholarship treats it as a word of uncertain, possibly pre-Greek, background rather than one with a clear Indo-European root. The word passed largely unchanged in form and meaning into Modern Greek.
