Etymology
The word traces back to the god Pan, whose sudden and eerie presence in the wild was said to strike travelers and herds with unreasoning fear. Ancient Greek used the adjective phrase panikon deima, 'fear caused by Pan', and over time the adjective was used on its own as a noun for that kind of fear. The word passed largely unchanged into Latin and then into most European languages.
