Etymology
Περιθώριο comes from the medieval Greek περιθώριον, built from περί (around) and θωρώ, a dialectal Greek verb meaning to see or look at. The word originally named the blank strip around a written text, the part left for the eye to rest on or for notes. From that literal sense of a bordering space, Greek extended the word to any margin of room, money, time, or social standing.
