Etymology
Δίσκος comes from Ancient Greek, where it named the flat round plate athletes threw in competition, the discus. The word is tied to the verb δικεῖν, meaning to throw or cast. Latin borrowed it as discus, and that Latin form later gave English disc, disk, dish, and desk. Modern Greek kept the original sense of a flat round object and extended it to trays, phonograph records, and computer disks.
