The word comes from French cocaïne, coined in the 19th century from coca, the name of the South American shrub whose leaves yield the alkaloid, plus the chemical suffix -ine. Coca itself comes from Quechua kuka. Greek borrowed the French term directly and adapted it to the native pattern of feminine nouns ending in -η.
