Etymology
Μήλο descends from Ancient Greek μῆλον, the standard word for apple and, more loosely, for tree fruit in general. The origin of μῆλον itself is disputed among linguists, and no secure Proto-Indo-European root is agreed on. Latin malum, meaning apple, is often linked to the Doric Greek form μᾶλον, likely through early contact between the two languages.
