Etymology

The word comes from Ancient Greek ἐρώμενος, the present passive participle of ἐράω, meaning to love or to desire. It literally denotes the one being loved, and it was paired in classical usage with ἐραστής, the one who loves, to describe the two sides of a romantic relationship. Modern Greek kept the old participle form but uses it simply as a noun for a lover.
