Εραστής is an agent noun built on the verb εράω/ερώ, meaning to love passionately or to desire. That verb also gave Greek the word έρωτας, passionate love or eros. The deeper origin of the root behind ἔρως is not settled among scholars, so no reconstructed root is given here. In classical Athens, εραστής had a precise social sense: the older, active partner in a pederastic pairing, matched with the younger ερώμενος.
