Etymology

The word comes from Γερμανία (Germany), which Greek borrowed from Latin Germania. The origin of the Latin name itself is disputed; it may come from a Celtic or early Germanic source, but no version is certain. Greek added the native adjectival suffix -ικός, the same ending used to turn other place and people names into adjectives, such as ελληνικός from Έλλην.
