Etymology

Σχόλιο comes from ancient Greek σχόλιον, a note or interpretive remark, often one a scholar wrote in the margin of a text. That word derives from σχολή, meaning leisure or a lecture given during that leisure time, the same word that gives English school. The root goes back to the verb ἔχειν, to have or hold, with a reduplicated stem σχ-.
