Etymology
Σημείωση comes from the verb σημειώνω, meaning to mark or note down. That verb in turn comes from σημείον, sign or mark, which traces back to the ancient noun σῆμα, sign. The word entered its modern form as a noun for a written mark left as a reminder or record.
