Etymology

The verb comes from the noun αστείο, meaning a joke, with the deponent verb suffix -εύομαι added to turn a noun into an action. Αστείο in turn traces back to the ancient adjective αστείος, meaning witty or urbane, which was formed from άστυ, meaning city or town. The old contrast was between the polished wit of city dwellers and the plainer speech of the countryside. The deeper origin of άστυ before Greek is debated among scholars, so no further root is given here.
