"Πα" is not an inherited word but a coined solmization syllable from the Byzantine chant tradition. Greek Orthodox music theory names the seven degrees of its diatonic scale Νη, Πα, Βου, Γα, Δι, Κε, Ζω, in a system that works much like the Western "Do Re Mi." "Πα" marks the second of these fixed pitch names and is taught to every student of psaltiki, the art of Byzantine chanting.
